Health and Safety policy
Health and Safety Policy for Ilford Removals
Ilford Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and relocation activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with household and commercial removals, transportation of goods and related services across our operating area.
Policy Statement and Objectives
The management of Ilford Removals recognises its duty to comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and to maintain safe systems of work. We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures.
Our health and safety objectives are to:
Promote a strong safety culture where everyone takes personal responsibility for their own safety and that of others. Minimise risks associated with lifting, carrying, loading, driving and working in customers premises. Provide suitable information, instruction, training and supervision. Maintain vehicles, equipment and tools in a safe and serviceable condition. Continuously improve our health and safety performance through monitoring and review.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management. They are responsible for ensuring that adequate resources are allocated to implement this policy and that health and safety considerations are included in all business decisions.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day implementation of safe working practices, including briefing staff on site-specific hazards, checking that equipment is safe to use and ensuring that personal protective equipment is worn where required.
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Staff must follow training and instructions, use equipment correctly, report hazards and incidents promptly and cooperate fully with health and safety procedures.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Ilford Removals carries out risk assessments for typical removal activities and for specific jobs where necessary. These assessments consider hazards such as manual handling, slips and trips, working at height during loading, vehicle movements, confined spaces in properties and adverse weather conditions.
Findings from risk assessments are used to develop safe systems of work, including job planning, route planning, use of appropriate equipment and assigning sufficient staff to each task. Staff are briefed on relevant risks and control measures before work commences, especially when operating in new or unfamiliar locations.
Training and Competence
We provide appropriate health and safety training for all employees based on their roles and responsibilities. This includes induction training, manual handling techniques, safe loading and unloading of vehicles, operation of moving equipment and awareness of hazards in residential and commercial premises.
Drivers receive additional training relating to vehicle safety, road risk, load security and safe parking at customer addresses. Refresher training is provided periodically and whenever working practices, equipment or legal requirements change.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a key element of our work and a primary focus of our safety management. We assess lifting tasks and encourage the use of mechanical aids wherever possible, such as sack trucks, trolleys and lifting straps. Items are packed, wrapped and handled to reduce the risk of strain, crush injuries and damage.
Employees are trained in correct posture, team lifting and safe handling of bulky or heavy items such as furniture, appliances and office equipment. Staff are instructed not to lift items beyond their capability and to request additional help or equipment where needed.
All equipment used in removals is inspected regularly, maintained according to manufacturer guidance and replaced when it is no longer safe. Faulty or damaged equipment must be reported immediately and taken out of service.
Vehicle Safety and Road Risk
Our vehicles are central to our operations and are maintained in a safe, roadworthy condition. Regular inspections and servicing are carried out by competent personnel. Drivers are expected to complete basic checks before and after journeys, including tyres, lights, mirrors, securing points and load restraints.
Loads are arranged to distribute weight safely and secured using appropriate straps and fixings to prevent movement during transit. Careful route planning is undertaken to minimise driving risks, taking into account local traffic patterns, road restrictions and access to residential streets and commercial premises.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
When working at customer addresses, our crews take care to protect both the property and the people within or near it. Floors and access routes may be protected with covers where appropriate, and clear walkways are maintained to avoid trip hazards.
We manage access points, doors and stairways to reduce the risk of collision and injury, using safe lifting paths and communication between team members. Where work may affect neighbours or passers-by, we take reasonable steps to prevent unauthorised access to working areas and to manage vehicle movements safely.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be eliminated by other means, Ilford Removals provides suitable personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety footwear, high-visibility clothing and any other protection identified as necessary. Employees are required to use this equipment correctly and to report any loss or damage for replacement.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported as soon as reasonably practicable to a supervisor or manager. This allows appropriate first aid, follow-up action and investigation to take place. Lessons learned from incidents are used to improve our procedures and prevent recurrence.
Emergency procedures are in place for incidents such as injuries, vehicle collisions, fire, spillages or structural damage at customer properties. Staff receive guidance on raising the alarm, contacting emergency services and safeguarding customers and the public.
Consultation, Monitoring and Review
We encourage open communication on health and safety matters. Employees are invited to share concerns, suggestions and feedback relating to safety and welfare. Regular monitoring, site visits and audits are carried out to check compliance with this policy and identify areas for improvement.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, legislation or industry standards. Updated versions are communicated to all staff and are available for customers to view on request.
By following this policy, Ilford Removals aims to conduct every removal in a safe, professional and responsible manner, protecting our teams, our customers and the wider community.
